Tiny squares of newsprint with code numbers are mixed into grain. They serve as a marking agent for positive identification, protecting the grain from theft.
Because of escalating production costs and lucrative grain prices, marking grain has again become an urgent necessity.
The RCMP recommend that all grain stored where it is not under regular observation for any period of time should be marked. In some cases insurance companies will only partially cover grain thefts if the grain has not been marked.
A pound of Cropgard marks 10,000 bushels of grain, placing 20 pieces of identification in every bushel. Warning decals, included with the package, warn the would-be thief that the grain is marked.
